The second annual South Asian Dance Dimensions competition will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at Richardson Auditorium, Alexander Hall. Seven South Asian fusion dance teams from across the nation will showcase their talents at the event hosted by Princeton's South Asian Students Association.
South Asian fusion is a dance style that blends the Indian dance styles of bhangra, raas/garba and Bollywood with hip hop, R&B and reggae. Princeton's Indian dance troupe Naacho will perform a special act at the competition, and Princeton students will emcee the event.
The competing dance teams are: Kamaal from the University of Delaware; Broad Street Baadshahz from Drexel University; Dhoom from the University of Maryland-College Park; Nasha from New York University; Pandemonium from New York University; Raaz from St. John's University; and Dhamaal from the University of Illinois-Chicago. A panel of judges will award more than $1,500 in prize money to the top teams.
The event also will feature special performances by Yale Jashan, Yale University's bhangra Indian dance team, and Stanford Raagapella, a South Asian a cappella group from Stanford University.
Princeton's South Asian Students Association, Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students and Undergraduate Student Government are sponsors of the event, which is open to the public.
Tickets are available at the Frist Campus Center box office, and online through University Ticketing or by calling (609) 258-9220. Tickets are free at the Frist box office for the first 300 Princeton students, faculty and staff with a TigerCard University ID. Tickets are $10 for others.
