· For most real situations, both activation and concentration considerations will control the current as a function of the applied over-potential at which the reduction reaction is taking place.
· The diagram shows the development of the current, starting at zero overpotential and the the exchange current  i0, then increasing with a slope, β, in the range controlled by activation energy considerations, and finally saturating at the limiting value, iL, determined by the diffusion controlled transport rate.
