Plastic Deformation

· When dislocation lines intersect, each picks up a "jog" equal in magnitude and direction to the Burgers vector of the intersecting dislocation.
· The diagrams below illustrate jog formation by the intersection of edge dislocations on orthogonal slip planes.
· The jogs will have either an edge or screw character as the Burgers vector, b, has the same magnitude and orientation at each position on the dislocation line and the line vector, t, is always along the line.
· For the case shown, both jogs are of screw character and have a length of one interatomic spacing.
