Material Property Definitions

Material data is defined using the FEMGEN command 'PROPERTY MATERIAL type', and attached to any part or set in the model using the FEMGEN command 'PROPERTY ATTACH'. ANSYS 'MP' commands are then generated by the interface program which assigns an identification number for each material defined. This number is used in ANSYS 'MAT' command for the elements definition.

ANSYS supports many different types of material property data. These data types are assembled into 'functional groups' under a single material name in order to provide all relevant data for a particular analysis. The interface program supports the following material types:

In some cases, more than one material type may be used to define the material properties of an element and the types that are supported by the interface program for each element are listed in tables A.1 and A.2 of Appendix A. In any case, the EXTERNAL material type can be used with any ANSYS element. Some elements do not require material properties, as shown in tables A.1 and A.2 of Appendix A. Elements FLUID38, SHELL99 and SOLID46 have an optional material property definition and whether a material property is defined or not, for such element, will control the definition of the element type through the element option keys (KEYOPT), refer to section 2.1.
