Karen Krahulik
Karen Krahulik, whose career has focused on academic and co-curricular initiatives at top U.S. universities, has been named senior associate dean for international programs and experiential learning at Princeton University. Krahulik, a 1991 Princeton alumna, will start her new role Aug. 28.
Krahulik will report to Jill Dolan, dean of the college.
"I'm delighted about Karen's appointment," Dolan said. "She brings deep experience in undergraduate education across disciplines and practices. And she's the perfect person to knit our international and service curriculum into an exciting progression of learning experiences for our students."
Krahulik comes to Princeton from New York University, where she has served as associate dean for academic affairs since 2011, overseeing the College of Arts and Science curriculum in New York and abroad. Krahulik was instrumental in integrating academics at NYU's 13 global sites, working with faculty to develop academic pathways to ensure that students in any major had the option of studying or interning abroad.
Previously, she worked in faculty affairs at Columbia University and as associate dean of the college at Brown University. From 1999 to 2005, she was director of the Center for LGBT Life at Duke University. She spent a year as coordinator at Princeton's LGBT Center soon after she graduated.
Krahulik has a Ph.D. in United States history from NYU. Her book, "Provincetown: From Pilgrim Landing to Gay Resort" (2005), traces the history of Provincetown, Massachusetts, from the 17th century to the present and argues that the development of cohesive communities cannot be separated from tensions around race, gender, class and immigration that have shaped and continue to shape global and local economies. She has also written numerous articles on oral history and gender studies.
Krahulik received her bachelor's degree in religion from Princeton, where she excelled as both a scholar and an athlete, earning a senior thesis award in women's studies and serving as captain of the women's swim team.

"I look forward to working with Princeton's extraordinary students, faculty and staff to help make international and experiential learning an even more important part of a Princeton education."
At Princeton, Krahulik will be responsible for developing a strategic vision for undergraduate international academic programs and experiential, immersive learning. She will work closely with colleagues in the Office of the Dean of the College and across the University.
Among her responsibilities, she will manage the Office of International Programs and develop a coherent, multifaceted approach to the international arc of undergraduate students' experience at the University. Princeton students have numerous ways to pursue international learning experiences, including through the Bridge Year Program, study abroad, international internships and postgraduate fellowships.
Krahulik will oversee the Community-Based Learning Initiative and its efforts to connect students' academic work with service to local, regional, national and international communities. She also will collaborate with the Pace Center for Civic Engagement to enable the service mission of the University through curricular and immersive learning experiences. Working with the McGraw Center for Teaching and Learning, she will facilitate service and international course design and pedagogy.
She also will serve as the Office of the Dean of the College liaison to the vice provost for international affairs and operations and will oversee memos of understanding with international institutions.
