For Princeton University faculty and students, the Mpala Research Centre, a multidisciplinary and multi-institutional field laboratory that sits on a 50,000-acre reserve and ranch in central Kenya, provides an expansive natural terrain ideal for large-scale field experiments in ecology, biology, geology and other fields. Students and other researchers at Mpala work in a setting where the human and natural worlds intersect, one of great natural beauty and diversity. A true international experience, Mpala embeds students in local schools and communities to learn about how people in pastoralist economies interact with and rely on the land and wildlife.

On his first international trip as Princeton provost, David S. Lee traveled this summer with a delegation from the University to visit the Mpala Research Centre, a multidisciplinary field-research station in Kenya. Lee also met with the American ambassadors to Kenya and Somalia and, before returning to Princeton, held a reception with Princeton alumni in Nairobi, Kenya's capital.

On Sept. 3, results were announced for the Great Grévy's Rally held in Kenya in January. The Princeton-sponsored event used 40,000 photos collected by 500 volunteers to track and identify the remaining wild population of the world's largest and most imperiled wild horse species, the Grévy's zebra. The rally revealed that 2,350 Grévy's remain, 95 percent of which live in just five counties in northern Kenya. The initiative was among the first to use "citizen scientists" to establish the population and range of an endangered mammal.
