All semester, professional choreographers and more than 60 Princeton students have been preparing for the annual Princeton Dance Festival, which takes place Dec. 4-6 at the Berlind Theatre at McCarter Theatre Center.

Princeton University junior Colby Hyland fell in love with dance when he was 8 years old. Now, 12 years later, the Massachusetts native is majoring in molecular biology and pursuing a certificate in dance.

Students bring learning to stage in Spring Dance Festival .

Many students come to Princeton with a talent for dance already well established. Others begin to explore dance as a new passion as part of their undergraduate experience. For all of these students, the annual Spring Dance Festival offers an opportunity to bring months of dance study and rehearsal to the stage, performing works by celebrated choreographers as well as original pieces students had a role in creating.

Why do we dance? Four students, four perspectives .

Imagine four dancers in a studio. Each has a different story that brought them into the dance community at Princeton University; each has a different major and different career aspirations. All have been rehearsing since September four to five hours weekly in preparation for the Lewis Center for the Arts' 2015 Spring Dance Festival. They are among over 50 Princeton undergraduates who will appear in the festival.

Silas Riener, a 2006 Princeton alumnus and a former member of Merce Cunningham Dance Company, has returned to campus to work with students in the dance program at the Lewis Center of the Arts on two performance projects that celebrate the mid-20th-century collaboration of dancer and choreographer Merce Cunningham and artist Robert Rauschenberg.

In the culmination of months of rehearsal -- highlighted by a unique opportunity to engage with an internationally celebrated choreographer -- more than 50 students from a range of academic departments will perform this month in the 2011 Spring Dance Festival presented by the University's Lewis Center for the Arts.
