Sō Percussion named Edward T. Cone Performers-in-Residence .

The modern percussion ensemble Sō Percussion has been named the Edward T. Cone Performers-in-Residence at Princeton University. As active participants in the Department of Music, the four-member group will teach graduate and undergraduate students; coach student chamber music ensembles; give master classes; workshop, rehearse and perform new works by student and faculty composers; and present two concerts from their touring repertoire each academic year.

FACULTY AWARD: Trueman receives Bessie Award for Outstanding Musical Composition/Sound Design .

Daniel Trueman, professor of music, has received the 2016 Bessie Award for Outstanding Musical Composition/Sound Design for his contributions to "There Might Be Others," a dance work choreographed by Rebecca Lazier, senior lecturer in dance in the Lewis Center for the Arts. The work premiered earlier this year at New York Live Arts in collaboration with Mobius Percussion and Princeton's Edward T. Cone Performers-in-Residence So Percussion.

Princeton music course debuts through online learning platform Kadenze .

Princeton University is expanding its online course offerings through Kadenze, an online learning platform specifically created to support the arts and creative technologies. On this platform, Princeton Professor of Music Daniel Trueman will offer the course "Reinventing the Piano," in which students will explore a new instrument called the Prepared Digital Piano.

UPDATE: Princeton's Caroline Shaw wins Pulitzer Prize for music .

Caroline Shaw, a graduate student in composition in the Department of Music at Princeton University and a New York-based musician, today won the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for music for "Partita for 8 Voices."

What does composing music look like? At Princeton, composition is taught at the undergraduate and graduate level. In this story, four members of the Department of Music describe their creative process, the surprising upside of learning composition at a liberal arts university versus a conservatory, and the challenges and rewards of developing and performing new work.
