UPDATED: Alexander Street and University Place intersection to reopen on Monday, Feb. 3

Beginning on Sunday, Feb. 2, construction crews will begin to reopen the intersection of Alexander Street and University Place to vehicular traffic. We anticipate that the intersection will be fully operational on Monday, Feb. 3.

Originally, the intersection was to open on Sunday, Jan. 26. Updated maps showing vehicular and pedestrian routes, parking and transit services are available on the Arts and Transit Project website.

Vehicle traffic

The intersection of University Place and Alexander Street will reopen as a roundabout, replacing the former traffic light at the "Wawa" corner. Motorists are advised to follow signage and proceed slowly as the public becomes accustomed to this new intersection.

The temporary bypass road that connected Alexander Street from just north of the new Princeton Station commuter parking lot to University Place will close when the roundabout opens.

The temporary traffic light at College Road and University Place is expected to remain at this time as the public becomes accustomed to the new roundabout.

Wawa

Vehicular access into and out of the Wawa customer parking lot will be one-way to and from University Place: entry at the west, closest to Wawa; and exit at the east, approximately where the temporary bypass road had connected to University Place. Please follow signs directing vehicles into and out of the Wawa customer lot. Additionally, the Wawa customer parking lot will be reconfigured.

Pedestrians

There will be a new mid-block crosswalk on Alexander Street, south of the new roundabout and across from the main entrance into Forbes College — with flashing lights that are motion-activated by pedestrians and bikes — allowing pedestrians to cross to the east side of Alexander Street where the sidewalk will be reopened and will continue along the south side of University Place (in front of Wawa).

The sidewalk on the east side of Alexander Street south of this new crosswalk will remain closed. Drivers are advised to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and to proceed slowly through this area as the public becomes accustomed to the new vehicular and pedestrian traffic patterns.

Transit

The NJ TRANSIT Princeton Station will remain in its current temporary location, south on Alexander Street. The Dinky train and the TigerPaWW bus service between Princeton Junction and Princeton will continue with no changes anticipated at this time.
