Yarn/Wire to perform student compositions

The Princeton Sound Kitchen, formerly called the Composers' Ensemble, will present Yarn/Wire, a quartet featuring two percussionists and two pianists, in a program of works written by students in the graduate Program in Composition, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, in Taplin Auditorium, Fine Hall.

What does composing music look like? At Princeton, composition is taught at the undergraduate and graduate level. In this story, four members of the Department of Music describe their creative process, the surprising upside of learning composition at a liberal arts university versus a conservatory, and the challenges and rewards of developing and performing new work. You can also view video clips of a work-in-progress by senior Stephanie Leotsakos and new works by Assistant Professor of Music Donnacha Dennehy and graduate student Yuri Boguinia.

The Princeton Sound Kitchen presents a wide variety of concerts and events of new music, serving the graduate student and faculty composers of the composition program at Department of Music at Princeton University. Creative collaboration produces original opera .

Students in Princeton's Atelier program, which brings guest artists to campus to collaborate with students and faculty, will direct and perform "The Antient Concert," an original chamber opera written by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon and composer Daron Hagen. The performance, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for 8 p.m. Sunday, April 17, in the Berlind Theatre.

University will host Handel festival .

International scholars and performers dedicated to honoring the life and works of Baroque composer George Frideric Handel will gather at the University for the American Handel Society conference on Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 21-23. This is the second time the American Handel Society has held its biennial festival at Princeton; the first was in 2007.

Prokofiev's 'Music for Athletes' premieres at Princeton .

A world premiere production of Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev's "Music for Athletes," recently restored by Princeton music scholar Simon Morrison, will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 17, in Richardson Auditorium, Alexander Hall.

Performance features Japanese taiko drums and flute .

"Katachi: The Shape of Sounds in Silence," a performance of Japanese taiko drums and flute, will be presented at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, in the Class of 1970 Theater at Whitman College.
