Tenebrae to perform classic and contemporary works

The 2012-13 Princeton University Concerts series will present Tenebrae, Britain's premier chamber choir, in a program of works by Paul Mealor, who composed music for the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, and composers of the Russian Choral Tradition, at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, in the Princeton University Chapel. This is the first time in its 119-year history that Princeton University Concerts has presented in this venue. Tenebrae member Gabriel Crouch is the director of the Princeton University Glee Club and choral program.

The Princeton University Glee Club, which performs a repertoire of sacred and secular choral music from the Renaissance to the present day, allows students with a wide range of nationalities, majors and skills to participate in a shared passion — singing. In a video about the Glee Club, 89 students gathered one warm April afternoon to rehearse "Sednalo e Djore Dos," a Bulgarian folk song that tells the story of an outgoing girl trying to get the attention of a shy boy.

London calling: Journeys of musical discovery .

A collaboration established between Princeton and the Royal College of Music (RCM) in 2007 offers Princeton students the opportunity to spend the fall semester of their junior year at the prestigious conservatory and is offered as part of Princeton's Study Abroad Program. Two undergraduates, Darya Koltunyuk and Katherine Buzard, and a 2011 alumnus, Joseph Gotoff, capture the RCM experience and share how it influenced their time at Princeton and their plans for the future.

University will host Handel festival .

International scholars and performers dedicated to honoring the life and works of Baroque composer George Frideric Handel will gather at the University for the American Handel Society conference on Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 21-23. This is the second time the American Handel Society has held its biennial festival at Princeton; the first was in 2007.

Buck's longtime love of music benefits Princeton student performers .

A generous bequest from J. Mahlon Buck Jr., a member of Princeton's Class of 1946, will provide essential support to the Princeton University Orchestra and the Princeton University Glee Club.

Princeton senior Cunningham awarded Mitchell Scholarship .

Princeton University senior Flannery Cunningham has been named a George J. Mitchell Scholar to spend a year studying music composition at University College Cork in Ireland. The Mitchell Scholarships were awarded to 12 students nationwide by the Washington D.C.-based U.S.-Ireland Alliance.

Being composed: The art of learning to write music .

What does composing music look like? At Princeton, composition is taught at the undergraduate and graduate level. In this story, four members of the Department of Music describe their creative process, the surprising upside of learning composition at a liberal arts university versus a conservatory, and the challenges and rewards of developing and performing new work. 'Boris Godunov' premiere takes center stage .

After months of inspired collaborations between Princeton scholars, students and artists, the curtain will rise on the University's world premiere production of "Boris Godunov" Thursday through Saturday, April 12-14, at the Berlind Theatre.
