Anyone passing by the area of University Place and Nassau Street on a weekday morning may notice a tantalizing aroma but not realize where it's coming from. The bouquet of butter, sugar and spice emanates from the University bake shop, which has been located in the lower level of Madison Hall since 1979.
As shown in this video, beginning shortly after 4 a.m. every weekday, the seven staff members in the bake shop are warming up the ovens and producing dozens of treats that will be featured in the residential dining halls, Dining Services retail operations and catered events across campus. From "morning glory" muffins to chocolate chunk cookies, the bake shop crafts goodies to tempt every palate. Bakers have created miniature versions of cupcakes adorned with butterflies, flowers and stars, and signature cakes including beach scenes, life-size Reunions jackets and even a gingerbread replica of Nassau Hall.
