Children's lecture, demonstrations explore science of germs

A holiday science lecture for parents and children ages 7 and up will explore the science behind germs at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, in McCosh 10.

Titled "Germs! A Detective Story," the event will examine how germs were discovered, how they behave and how scientists continue to create new methods to fight the spread of infections.

The event will feature live experiments and interactive demonstrations with audience members as well as a look at bacteria that grow in exotic environments. The lecture will be led by Howard Stone, the Donald R. Dixon '69 and Elizabeth W. Dixon Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

The show is sponsored by the Princeton Center for Complex Materials and the Princeton Institute for the Science and Technology of Materials. Worms farm germs: Discovery illuminates complex natural relationships .

Princeton University researchers have found that the roundworms Caenorhabditis elegans have a sure-fire method of ensuring a steady supply of a bacteria they eat — they grow their own. The worms carry the bacteria Escherichia coli along with them, and drop bacteria along the way to create thriving new bacterial colonies that the worms later return to "harvest" and eat.
