The remarks given by President Emeritus William G. Bowen at the service of remembrance and celebration for President Emeritus Robert F. Goheen on Sunday, April 27, in the University Chapel are now available online.
Goheen, who served as Princeton's 16th president from 1957 to 1972, died March 31 at age 88. A full obituary is available online.
Bowen, Princeton's 17th president, said that, in his view, "Bob's most lasting substantive contribution to the future direction of Princeton was his success in building the faculty and the Graduate School in the late 1950s and 1960s. This quiet, almost unnoticed, process of strengthening the University's core at a pivotal moment in its history made possible later developments of all kinds, including coeducation. Although less dramatic than his introduction of women undergraduates to Princeton, his commitment to diversity, and his response to campus turbulence, this 'erection of the pillars' … was every bit as important."
The service was Webcast live; an archive will be available online.
