Graham named associate ombuds officer

Diedrick (D.A.) Graham, formerly the student ombudsman at San Diego State University, has been named Princeton's associate ombuds officer.

Graham, whose appointment was effective Feb. 15, will provide assistance to campus community members who have concerns, complaints or other issues regarding their work or studies. The ombuds office offers confidential consultations and can help develop solutions to problems through mediation, individual coaching, group facilitation or training, or referrals to other University services.

Graham worked at San Diego State for two years. Prior to that, he was a U.S. Navy chaplain, serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom and receiving the Military Chaplains Association Chaplain of the Year Award.

A graduate of the University of Alabama, Graham holds a master of divinity degree from the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta and a master of human relations degree, with a specialization in mediation and negotiation, from the University of Oklahoma. He is a member of the International Ombudsman Association, the Association for Conflict Resolution and the American Society for Training and Development.

Graham succeeds Nicholas Diehl, who left to work for the National Institutes of Health.

Course teaches ways to turn conflict into positive change .

Conflict is a normal part of life that can be difficult and distressing, but ultimately can lead to positive changes if handled properly. That is the message Camilo Azcarate has been imparting to members of the campus community since becoming the University’s ombuds officer in August 2003. Azcarate has worked with several campus offices on conflict management training programs, which have been so well received that his office is now offering courses on the subject to all faculty, staff and students.

Diversity Council formed to carry forward work from report and survey .

The University has formed a new Diversity Council to advise the offices of the provost and executive vice president on diversity-related matters. The council, composed of 28 staff members, will build upon the foundations laid by the Diversity Working Group. It is co-chaired by Lianne Sullivan-Crowley, vice president for human resources, and Terri Harris Reed, vice provost for institutional equity and diversity. 

Hindu and Muslim life coordinators named .

The Office of Religious Life has appointed coordinators for Hindu and Muslim life as part of efforts to enhance support for Princeton students from a variety of backgrounds. Vineet Chander has been named coordinator of Hindu life, a newly created position, and Sohaib Sultan has been appointed coordinator of Muslim life, both effective Aug. 15.  

Three Princeton seniors, two alumni awarded Schwarzman Scholarships .

The Schwarzman Scholarship covers the cost of graduate study and living toward a one-year master’s program at Tsinghua University in Beijing. The Princeton winners are Class of 2022 members Amina Ahmad, Justin Curl and Katherine (Katie) Dykstra, as well as Class of 2018 graduate Edric Huang and Class of 2016 graduate Nicholas Keeley.
