Charles Westoff, the Maurice P. During '22 Professor of Demographic Studies Emeritus and professor of sociology emeritus, has been honored with the 2007 International Union for the Scientific Study of Population Council Laureate Award.
The award recognizes his contributions to the field of demography, his dedicated service to the organization and his distinguished career.
Westoff joined the Princeton faculty in 1962 and served as director of the Office of Population Research from 1975 to 1992. He transferred to emeritus status in 1999.
He has studied fertility and family planning in the United States and developing countries, as well as population policy. His recent research activities include an assessment of unmet need for family planning in 57 developing countries, an analysis of the relationship between religiosity and fertility in 34 European countries and the United States, and a study of the impact of a family planning program on the reduction of abortion in two cities in Georgia.
