Wilentz wins award for Dylan liner notes

Sean Wilentz, the Dayton-Stockton Professor of History, has won a Deems Taylor Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers for his liner notes for a recent Bob Dylan recording.

The awards recognize outstanding print, broadcast and new media coverage of music. Wilentz was honored for a historical and critical essay he wrote that is part of a 52-page booklet accompanying "Live 1964: Concert at Philharmonic Hall -- The Bootleg Series Volume 6," which was released in spring 2004. Documenting the historic Halloween concert from the vivid memories of attending it as a 13-year-old, Wilentz illustrated the musical and social importance of that night's performance in New York.

Also the director of the Program in American Studies, Wilentz has been a Princeton faculty member since 1979 and specializes in early national and Jacksonian history. He is the author of several books, including this year's "The Rise of American Democracy: Jefferson to Lincoln."
