Two new staff members have been named in the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students .
Dean Kathleen Deignan has announced the appointments of Hilary Herbold as associate dean of undergraduate students and of Makeba L. Clay as director of the Carl A. Fields Center for Equality and Cultural Understanding .
Herbold, whose appointment was effective July 1, has been a lecturer and residential college administrator at Princeton since 1992. She will be responsible for coordinating the undergraduate discipline system, foreign student advising and emergency management of matters involving undergraduate students.
A graduate of the University of California-Irvine, Herbold earned her Ph.D. degree in English from Princeton in 1997. She taught in Princeton's English department from 1992 to 2000. The next year, she served as director of studies in Rockefeller College and became dean of that college in 2001.
She succeeds Marianne Waterbury, who is on leave.
Clay, who will begin her job Aug. 18, comes to Princeton from the University of Maryland-College Park, where she has served as director of the Maryland Leadership Institute for International Public Policy and also as the associate director of student affairs in the School of Public Affairs since 2001.
Clay will be responsible for overseeing the Fields Center, which was established in 1971 as the Third World Center to provide a social, cultural and political environment that reflects the needs and concerns of students of color at the University. She also will advise student of color organizations. She will succeed Heddye Ducree, who is retiring.
A graduate of the State University of New York-Albany, Clay received her M.A. from Bowling Green State University. She has been pursuing graduate studies in the Ph.D. program in educational policy at the University of Maryland. She previously served as assistant director of residential life at Johns Hopkins University and at Western Maryland College. She also has been a faculty member with the Maryland Governor's Commission on Volunteerism and Service.
