Threats to Universities and What We Can Do

The United States is home to an enviable set of leading research institutions and colleges across the country. These institutions have fostered major scientific innovations, contributed to social mobility within the country, and been an attraction for students and faculty from around the world across disciplines. Yet, US higher education faces multiple challenges, some from outside forces and others arguably generated from within. Professor Canes-Wrone will discuss the challenges, including new public opinion data about universities; political issues at the federal, state, and local levels; and how the public opinion data and political issues relate to on-campus activity. After describing the historical and current context, she will discuss ways in which universities and colleges can address these challenges to maintain their leadership in higher education.

Brandice Canes-Wrone is Professor of Political Science, Maurice R. Greenberg Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, and a professor by courtesy at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. She is also the founding director of the Center for Revitalizing American Institutions at Hoover. During the course of her career, Canes-Wrone has published extensively on political institutions, mass political behavior, and political economy. Prior to her positions at Stanford, Canes-Wrone was on the faculties of MIT, Northwestern, and Princeton. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Academy of Sciences and Letters. Additionally, she has served on the editorial boards of numerous political science and political economy journals, as well as on the boards of the American National Elections Studies, the Institute for Advanced Study in Toulouse, and the Presidents and Executive Politics Section of the American Political Science Association. Canes-Wrone holds a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University (’93) and a PhD from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University.
