*Hymn No. 8 - Praise to the Living God (Diademata)

*Call to Worship - Dean Boden

Invocation

*Prayer of Confession

One:  Let us confess our sins to God.

All:  Almighty and everlasting God, always more ready to hear than we are to pray, always willing to give more than we either desire or deserve: pour upon us the abundance of your mercy; forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, through Jesus Christ our Savior.  Amen.

*Assurance of Forgiveness

Reading - Psalm 27 - The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?  When evildoers assail me to devour my flesh— my adversaries and foes— they shall stumble and fall.  Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war rise up against me, yet I will be confident.  One thing I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple.  For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will set me high on a rock.  Now my head is lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the Lord.  Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud, be gracious to me and answer me!  “Come,” my heart says, “seek his face!”  Your face, Lord, do I seek.  Do not hide your face from me.  Do not turn your servant away in anger, you who have been my help.  Do not cast me off, do not forsake me, O God of my salvation!  If my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will take me up.  Teach me your way, O Lord, and lead me on a level path because of my enemies.  Do not give me up to the will of my adversaries, for false witnesses have risen against me, and they are breathing out violence.  I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.  Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!

Anthem - Meditabor in mandatis Tuis by Caspar Aiblinger (1779-1867) - I will meditate on thy commandments, which I have loved exceedingly: and I will lift up my hands to thy commandments, which I have loved. - Psalm 119:47-48a

Reading - Philippians 3:17-4:1 - Brothers and sisters, join in imitating me, and observe those who live according to the example you have in us.  For many live as enemies of the cross of Christ; I have often told you of them, and now I tell you even with tears. Their end is destruction; their god is the belly; and their glory is in their shame; their minds are set on earthly things.  But our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.  He will transform the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all things subject to himself.  Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved.

Sermon - “Divine Makeover” by Otis Byrd, Jr.

*Hymn No. 446 - Jesus, Still Lead On (Seelenbräutigam)

Prayers of the People

One: God of love and mercy,

All: Hear our prayer.

Lord’s Prayer - Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name.  Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.  And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.  Amen.

Choral response - Stand by Me by Charles Albert Tindley (1851-1933) - When the storms of life are raging, stand by me.  When the storms of life are raging, stand by me.  When the world is tossing me like a ship upon the sea,Thou who rulest wind and water, stand by me in the midst of tribulations, stand by me.  In the midst of tribulations, stand by me.  When the host of hell assail, and my strength begins to fail, Thou who never lost a battle, stand by me.  In the midst of faults and failures, stand by me.  In the midst of faults and failures, stand by me.  When I’ve done the best I can, and my friends misunderstand, Thou who knowest all about me, stand by me.

*Exchange of the Peace

One:  The peace of God be always with you.

All:And also with you.

Offertory Sentence

Music at the Offering - Psalm 130 by John Ferguson (b. 1941) - Out of the depths I cry to you; O Savior, hear me calling. let your ears consider the voice of my supplication.  If you, Lord, were to note what is done amiss, who, Lord?  Who could stand?  For there is forgiveness with you; therefore you shall be feared.  I wait for the Lord, my soul waits for the Lord, whose word is my hope. - Psalm 130, translated from Martin Luther’s text

*Doxology - Praise God the Source of life and birth, praise God the Word enfleshed on earth, praise God, the Spirit, Holy Flame, All glory, honor to God’s name!  (Old Hundredth)

*Prayer for Princeton - O Eternal God, the source of life and light for all peoples, we pray you would endow this University with your grace and wisdom: give inspiration and understanding to those who teach and to those who learn; grant vision to its trustees and administrators; to all who work here and to all who bear her name give your guiding Spirit of sacrificial courage and loving service.  Amen.

The University Chapel is a welcoming community of faith.  We gather to sing God's praises, to hear God's living Word, to seek justice, and to proclaim God's love for all people.  Every Sunday of every month the congregation is invited to bring non-perishable food items to be donated to Arm in Arm.  If you are interested in making a contribution toward Sunday flowers in the chapel as a memorial, please contact Liz Powers for details at 609-258-3048.  The offering this morning will go to Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) MSF is an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists in France in 1971.  In 1999, MSF received the Nobel Peace Prize.  Today the flowers are given in memory of Henry S. Horn.

César Franck Bicentennial – 2022 marks the bicentennial of French organist and composer César Franck (1822-1890).  In celebration, throughout 2022, University Organist Eric Plutz will offer the complete works for organ.  The Invitatories and Voluntaries at the Sunday morning services provide ample space for the twelve large compositions, and the survey continues through Lent.
