*Invocation

Reading - Psalm 23

One - The Lord is my shepherd I have everything I need.

All - He lets me rest in fields of green grass and leads me to quiet pools of fresh water.  He gives me new strength.

One - He guides me in the right paths, as he has promised.

All - Even if I go through the deepest darkness, I will not be afraid, Lord, for you are with me.

One - Your shepherd's rod and staff protect me.

All - You prepare a banquet for me, where all my enemies can see me; you welcome me as an honored guest and fill my cup to the brim.

One - I know that your goodness and love will be with me all my life; and your house will be my home as long as I live.

Anthem - In Heavenly Love Abiding (The Salley Gardens) arrange by George Bayley - In heavenly love abiding, no change my heart shall fear; and safe is such confiding, for nothing changes here: the storm may roar without me, my heart may low be laid; but God is round about me, and can I be dismayed?  Wherever God may lead me, no want shall turn me back; my Shepherd is beside me, and nothing can I lack.  God’s wisdom ever waketh, the path is never dim: I see the way God taketh, and I will walk therein.  Green pastures are before me, which yet I have not seen; bright skies will soon be o’er me, where dark’ning clouds have been.  My hope I cannot measure, my path to life is free: my Saviour has my treasure, and God will walk with me.  Anna Laetitia Waring (1823-1910), alt.

Reading - John 10:22-30 - At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon.  So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense?  If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”  Jesus answered, “I have told you, and you do not believe.  The works that I do in my Father’s name testify to me; but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep.  My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me.  I give them eternal life, and they will never perish.  No one will snatch them out of my hand.  What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father’s hand.  The Father and I are one.”

Sermon - “Wisdom and Courage” by Thomas Hontz ’22

*Hymn - The King of Love My Shepherd Is

Prayers of the People – Dean Thames

One - God of love and mercy,

All - Hear our prayer.

Lord’s Prayer - Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name.  Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.  And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.  Amen.

The University Chapel is a welcoming community of faith.  We gather to sing God's praises, to hear God's living Word, to seek justice, and to proclaim God's love for all people.  Every Sunday of every month the congregation is invited to bring non-perishable food items to be donated to Arm in Arm.  If you are interested in making a contribution toward Sunday flowers in the chapel as a memorial, please contact Liz Powers for details at 609-258-3048.  The offering this morning will go to the Network for Religious and Traditional Peacemakers.  Based in New York and working closely with the United Nations, the Network was founded in 2013 as a concrete response to the risen awareness of the need to include grassroots leaders and authorities in the work done to build sustainable peace. Since its founding, the Network has grown into a community of peacemakers ranging from grassroots religious and traditional actors to international NGOs, think tanks, and academic institutes.
