Understanding the Politics of the Gulf Cooperation Council States (GCC)
A Lunch Time Crash Course for Students, Faculty, and Researchers
The Gulf Cooperation Council states (Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates) have since their inception gone through quite unique socio-economic and political developments. In this workshop you will learn about the political structure and dynamics of these states since their establishment until today, including the role of religious and tribal politics; the external powers and oil as sources of authority and legitimacy; the elective institutions and representation mechanisms; as well as of the internal and regional impact of the Arab Spring protest.
Each independent session will provide you with a different perspective of the socio-political events taking place in these monarchies. Join us for all three sessions or as many as your schedule permits.
Tuesday, April 3 - Session 1: Who rules the GCC states (how and why)?
