Drugs, Crime, Sex, and Sufis: Publiticizing Islam in Kurdish Istanbul
Chris Houston and Onur Günay did anthropological research in Istanbul amongst Kurdish migrants, Islamic groups, and Sufi orders twenty years apart. In this talk, they will reflect upon surprising continuities and ruptures between state discourses and policies towards Islam and Kurds. In the context of the resurgence of the war between the Turkish state and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), they will explore the ethics and politics of religious life and changing urban landscapes in Kurdish Istanbul.
