Failure Mechanisms

· Scanning Electron Micrographs (SEM) of the 1018 steel fracture surface show the dimples formed by void coalescence in more detail.
· The equiaxed dimples (left) formed in the flat center of the "cup."
· The elongated dimples in the conical shear lip are shown on the right.
· Magnification is x 1250 for both photographs.
