Mechanical Properties

· Standard test samples for constant tensile deformation measurements have the form shown in the picture.
· Each sample has wide ends to be held in the grips that apply the forces, and a narrower test section.

· The cylindrical sample (a) has a diameter of about 12.7 mm and a test length of about 60 mm.
· The rectangular sample (b) has a cross-section 12 x 6 mm2 , and a test length of about 90 mm.
· A strain detector with a gauge length of about 50 mm may be used to measure the strain in the test region of the sample. Combining this measurement with the applied stress data yields the stress/strain curve.
