· Fullerine tubes may also be
formed from covalently bonded carbon atoms. The tube has a hemispherical cap.
Experiments indicate that tubes may be formed with more than one layer.
· These structures are very elastic
and may be deformed mechanically, but will then recover their original shape
when the external forces are removed. The clip shows the thermal vibrations
of such a tube at two different temperatures. The increased internal energy
at the high temperature is associated with larger tube vibrational amplitudes.
