Introduction

When he met her, it seemed all too late. He is rich, arrogant, and spoiled by women, whereas she is past her golden age, financially desperate and emotionally distrustful. Love is a game that he no longer cherishes, yet to her, it is a luxury beyond her reach. Her reserved yet unpretentious manner enchants him, but all he wants is an affair with no commitments attached. How much would it take for the two to fall in love, when love has lost its meaning? Maybe a city has to fall, and the world as they know it has to come to an end.

Adapted from the well-known novella by Eileen Chang, “Love in a Fallen City” takes you back to Shanghai and Hong Kong in the 1940s, when the East and the West collide, intertwine, and flourish. Taking place among the turmoil of World War II, the story is as romantic as it is realistic, as sensational as it is subtle, and as modern and daring as it is infused with old-time charm. This March, let love befall the fallen city.

Directed by Yifeng Wang '11 & Peiwen Xu '13, adapted by Danqi Shen '11
