Bacteria can sence their population density by comunicating with extracellular signal molecules. However, each bacteria decies by itself if the population is dense enough to do things that they will not do if they "feel" lonely. Therefore at intermediate density, some of them (the green cells) "think" it not dense enough while some of them "think" in the opposite way.
