An image of a star simulated with a laser, taken with a prototype optical system designed for detecting extrasolar earthlike planets on a space telescope. The optical system (shaped pupil coronagraph) confines the diffraction and glare from a star in the vertical direction, leaving dark regions in the horizontal direction, where a small dim planet could be seen if they are present.
