A letter from a researcher looking for subjects for project on science competitions

December 2003

As part of my doctoral research at the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, I am looking to involve those who entered the Intel Science Talent Search, the Westinghouse Science Talent Search (which is the former version of the Intel program), The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, the Siemen's Westinghouse Competition, or any other highly regarded high school science and engineering competition.

I am looking for those who were winners, finalists, or didn't win. I am particularly interested in those over 22 years old. All participants will be kept confidential and there will be no connection between the name of those who participate in the research and their responses. All participants will be able to get the final paper if they so desire.

My interest is in finding out if winning or not winning one of these awards, some with a pretty high scholarship prize, has any impact on someone's professional track. I am looking for those who went into a science and technology area or those who went into a totally different field.

If you or if you know someone in these categories, please ask them to send me their email address, which contest they entered, and whether they won or not. I will then put them on my list of people to send the survey to.

I am looking to collect the data over the next 8 weeks so time is important. Although most of the data will be conducted via email, if someone is interested in participating and they don't have access to the internet, I can send them a paper copy of the survey.

Thank you,

Stephen Brand
