LetterBox Letter from an alumnus about Make English official Date Posted: December 27, 2004 I was wondering how many of PAW’s readers know that Rep. Virgil Goode of Virginia has proposed H.J.Resolution 94 which seeks an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to establish English as the official US language? Of course it may be many, many years before all the states ratify it. At age 87, I wonder if my children, or their children, will see its acceptance. The fact that English is my native tongue probably leads me to favor its acceptance. (By the same token, speakers of other tongues may very likely not favor it … although there are prominent exceptions.) At any rate, readers of PAW, a hundred or so years from now, will know its fate. Princeton University will certainly feel the outcome … for better or for worse! Lambert Lyons-Montgomery, ’39 Respond
