An
ionic solid is bonded by electrostatic interactions between its constituent
ions. These are compound materials and include the alkali halides and some
oxides. In general, they are high melting point materials.
The diagram shows the fcc crystal structure of NaCl that has a basis of one Na and one Cl ion. The hard sphere model shows the {1 0 0} planes of the crystal and contains more than a single unit cell. |
