An
intermetallic compound is a compound of specific composition between two
metallic species. On a binary phase diagram, regions associated by these
compounds are bounded by two phase zones. The range of compositions allowed
for the intermetallic is narrow, its width (in composition) indicating
the departure from stoichiometry that can occur while maintaining the same
crystal structure.
An example of such a compound if CuAl2 at the right hand side of the partial phase diagram shown. It departs from stoichiometry to both the (Al) and (Cu) direction. |
