Germanium
is a semiconductor in group IVA of the periodic table. It has an atomic
number of 32, an atomic weight of 72.59, and a density of 5.32 Mg/m3.
Its melting temperature is 937.4 C.
The
electronic configuration of germanium is (Ar)(3d)10(4s)2(4p)2
and the atomic radius is 0.137 nm.
Germanium
has the diamond cubic crystal structure shown, an fcc lattice with a basis
of two germanium atoms, one at (0,0,0) and the other at (1/4, 1/4, 1/4)
in units of the cube edge. It can also be visualized as two interpenetrating
fcc lattices of germanium atoms with their origins displaced by (1/4, 1/4,
1/4). |
