atomic system is said to be bound if its total energy, the sum of the kinetic
and potential energy terms, is less than zero. The turning points of the
motion of this bound system occur when all of the energy is manifested
as potential energy.
If the total energy is greater than zero the atoms may suffer a collision but then separate to infinity. This system is not bound. |
