An
alloy is a combination of two or more elements. The diagram illustrates
(a) a unit cell of a face-centered-cubic metal with an interstitial atom,
(b) a substitutional alloy between copper and zinc (a brass) where both
types of atom sit on the fcc lattice sites, and (c) an interstitial alloy
of carbon in iron with the carbon occupying the interstitial sites in the
iron crystal.
In
general, there will be limits on the composition range of the alloy. If
the solid solubility range is exceeded, a second phase that may be either
an alloy or a chemical compound will be formed. |
