The
photographs below show crevice corrosion of a fuselage panel of a maritime
patrol aircraft. The rivets attaching an inner structure failed at several
locations and permitted water to enter between the outer panel and the
attached structure.

The
crevice corrosion shown destroyed the bonding layer between the two sections,
permitting more water to enter the structure, and the corrosion to be agravated
as shown in the detail photograph. This interior process was not visible
in exterior inspection. |
