Composite Materials

· The photograph shows a composite cylinder that has failed in compression.
· Rather than exhibiting plastic buckling characteristic of metals, the composite de-bonds and the fibers splay out. This failure mode adsorbs more energy than that associated with the plastic failure of a metal of similar dimension.
