Composite Materials

· Practical use of composites requires a fiber content that improves the mechanical properties of the matrix. Fiber contents between Vcrit and the maximum Vf for which the fibers are not in contact determine the property range that can be achieved.
· For the graphite-epoxy composite material: σ*m = 0.1 GPa, σm = 0.06 GPa, σ*f = 1.0 GPa so that: Vcrit = 4.3 %, and Vmin = 3.9 %.
· These low fiber volume fraction values show that for practicable materials: Vf >> Vcrit .
· The working range for Vf is approximately: 5 % < Vf < 75%
