Failure Mechanisms

· Photographs of fatigue-fracture surfaces of two steel rods show the failure starting at a surface flaw, propagating in a slow fatigue crack-growth region (clamshell markings), and a final fast fracture region (dull and fibrous). The maximum stress level is higher for (a) than (b).
