Plastic Deformation

· The atomic scale picture of the slip produced by a unit dislocation and a pair of Shockley partial dislocations is shown.
· The two partial dislocations are associated with a region of "stacking fault" as their presence alters the stacking sequence of planes in the region of the slip plane
· In an fcc crystal, the stacking fault creates next-nearest-neighbor changes in the region of the slip plane that gives a local hcp lattice.
