Mechanical Properties

· Fracture normally terminates the useful life of a component, and this may occur in the elastic response range (brittle fracture) or after some plastic deformation (ductile fracture).

· The photograph shows an F-14 on a steam catapult prior to launch from a carrier deck. The launch release pressure is determined by the ductile failure of a plug holding the front wheel.
· The plug failure shows the characteristic cup-cone fracture surface produced by the final rapid shear failure.
