The diagrams
below compare a chain design in a manuscript of Leonardo da Vinci to
a modern bicycle chain. Engineering is well founded in history! The links in
the da Vinci chain are solid and held in place by pins. They lack the friction
reducing rollers of the modern bicycle chain.
