Two technological
advances are shown in the bas-relief of circa 700 BCE at Kouyunjik.
The problem is the same, move a statue to its final location. In this case,
friction between the sled and the ground is reduced by employing rollers.
These are fed under the sled at the front and recycled after being removed
from the rear as the statue moves forward. The picture suggests that this requires
a smaller group of humans to achieve the desired result. The relief
also shows wheeled carts with hub-bearings being used to transport the rollers
and ropes required for the activity. |
