By 1900 the Safety had developed to incorporate pneumatic tires, invented by Dunlop in Ireland, and a triangulated frame that provided the required light, strong, rigid structure. The bike shown is a Tribune Blue Streak from the Henry Ford Museum that had been raced by Barney Oldfield.

The drop handle-bars reduce the aerodynamic drag of the bike/rider system during a race, maximizing the use of rider power output. Bicycles of this period were a major mode of personal transportation.

In 1899 the American Bicycle Company, formed from the consolidation of 19 makers, produced 700,000 bicycles. Mass production and standardization were introduced to manufacturing.
