Course Description. An introduction to modal and many-valued logics, with emphasis on philosophical motivation through a study of applications and paradoxes.

Prerequisites. PHI 201, or an equivalent, or a more advanced logic course.

Required Textbooks.

J.C. Beall and B. van Fraassen, Possibililites and Paradox.
E. Schechter, Classical and Nonclassical Logics.

Some additional articles will either be handed out in class or posted to the course web site.

Lectures. Tues & Thurs, 11:00am-12:20pm in Frist Campus Center, Room 234

Precepts. This course has no precepts.

Requirements and Grades.

Problem Sets (35%): There will be approximately one problem set per week. Your problem sets should be turned in either directly to the professor, to his mailbox in room 211 (second floor) of 1879 Hall, or sent via email.
Midterm Exam (30%).
Final Exam (35%). Option: You have the choice to write a final paper instead of take the final exam. Please see the professor if you would like to pursue this option.
