6.2 Problem description

The flanges of the box girder are 300mm wide, the webs are 700mm deep spaced symmetrically 200mm apart. The webs are 6mm thick and the flange is 15mm thick. The span of the full beam is 6000mm. In this case the worst situation is being considered with the load of 50kN being applied as a concentrated line load on the outer parts of the lower web at the mid-span; because of the symmetry of the beam and the loading only half the span needs to be modelled. For clarity the full cross section of the beam is being modelled. Shell elements will be used as this will be the most appropriate element type.

Other methods of modelling this beam that could be used are a full solid model using brick elements, or at the simplest level beam elements with the relevant beam properties.
