The idea for Stripe Magazine was born in the fall of 2009, when then-freshman Shreya Murthy came to Princeton’s campus hoping to join the student fashion magazine. Upon learning that no such organization existed, she decided to form one. After months of planning, she brought together twenty-five Princeton University students in February 2010 to begin working on such a project. The result of their efforts was the inaugural issue of Stripe Magazine, Princeton’s first and only student-run fashion publication.
The magazine’s fashion focus runs the gamut - we cover everything from runway shows and haute couture to the everyday “street style” found on campus. Stripe’s coverage is not limited to fashion, however. Other topics include beauty & health, entertainment, campus news & events, sustainability, and more. In the upcoming year, Stripe also plans to host fashion-related events, such as fashion shows, style swaps, lectures by fashion industry leaders, trips to NYC to visit designer workshops and showrooms as well as the headquarters of professional fashion magazines, and informational sessions for those interested in careers in the fashion industry.
Stripe operates on a philosophy of body-positivity, and we aim to feature women and men of all shapes, sizes, and colors. We do not airbrush our models or use photo-enhancing techniques to alter their appearances. We also will not feature fur products or clothing by companies that use child labor. Additionally, Stripe promotes the idea of fashion as an art form, to be taken as seriously as any other creative field. Fashion can be beautiful, but it can also tell a story, provide social criticism, start a movement, and influence a generation. We are the new generation of fashion enthusiasts, and we hope Stripe reflects a more evolved viewpoint when it comes to both our bodies and the styles we wear.
