2-11: The Cases:
For each city we
will discuss the following issues:
- Condition and circumstances of arrival of relevant groups.
- Insertion into local economy. Development of economic life.
- Relations with other racial/ethnic groups. Comparison of
experiences.
- Political development in local and national arenas.
- Development of local culture and links to both "home" country
and national "Latino culture".
- Gender conflicts and class inequality.
Aside from the listed readings, there will be Web links providing
information on various aspects of each city. Note that readings do not
necessarily deal with the specific city, but are intended to provide
"thick" descriptions of some of the themes and issues addressed in
lectures.
