Once again we gathered together to plan for and play in the season ending game. This year Mark Ratliff was the captain of the Black team and Todd Muney was captain for Orange. Both spent considerable time chosing teams that reflected our typical Black/Orange players, provided a balance of skills, and at the same time gave their team what they thought was the best combination for winning. I think we did well at accomplishing all three goals.
This year's game could be named "The Penalty Parade". Our referees this year were quick to call whatever they saw, whether real or imagined. The Black team took the first series of penalties while the Orange team scored the first goal on a shot from the point by Todd Muney. Despite the series of penalties for Black, the first period ended with only the one goal having been scored.
In the second period the penalties were awarded a little more evenly. Charlie Hatfield from the Black team scored on a solo effort, tying the game at a goal apiece. Bill DiCola then scored two of his own for Black, putting his team up 3 to 1 at the end of the second period.
Starting the third period the game was by no means finished. Karsten Hilpert scored two more goals for Orange to tie the game. Regulation time ended in a 3 to 3 tie. Given the differences in each team's strengths and weaknesses, you couldn't have imagined the teams would be so evenly matched.
We agreed to skate a five minute, sudden death over-time. If the score remained tied after that, we would resort to a shoot out.
The over-time began with Orange applying considerable pressure in the offensive end. Black was able to weather the storm of Orange's first strong shift. On the second shift Black was able to carry the puck deep into its own offensive zone. Bill DiCola passed the puck back to Mark Ratliff on the point and then skated to the net. Mark took a long wrist shot which Bill deflected into the net, giving Bill a hat trick on the day and winning the game for Black.
I don't think we could have asked for a better game. The rivalry between Orange and Black will surely continue next year.
Mark Ratliff and Bill DiCola shared the majority of votes for the game MVP award.
Tommy Oprzadek was selected for the Spirit of Noon-time award for his consistent attendance, quality of play, and positive contributions to all of our skates throughout the year.
Alex Vukasin was awarded most improved player this year.
The team rosters.
